Confused and curious, the workers decided to seek spiritual guidance. A local saint, revered for his wisdom, meditated on the matter and revealed that the rock was not ordinary—it was sacred and symbolized the presence of Maa Kali herself. The saint advised them not to disturb the rock and instead build a temple around it.

The History of Dehradun: From Mythology to Modernity

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. Nestled in the Doon Valley between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, the city has been influenced by mythology, colonial rule, and modern development.

Mythological Origins

According to Hindu legends, the city’s name originates from “Dera” (camp) and “Doon” (valley). It is believed that Guru Ram Rai, the son of Guru Har Rai (the seventh Sikh Guru), set up his camp here in the 17th century. Over time, “Dera Doon” evolved into Dehradun.

Ancient and Medieval History

  • The region finds mentions in the Mahabharata and Ramayana, suggesting it was once home to sages and warriors.
  • Ashoka’s Rock Edicts, found in Kalsi (near Dehradun), indicate that the Mauryan Empire extended its influence here around 250 BCE.
  • During the medieval period, Dehradun saw rule by various dynasties, including the Katyuri Kings and the Mughals.

British Influence & Colonial Era

  • The British annexed Dehradun in 1815 after the Anglo-Gorkha War.
  • They developed it as an educational and military hub, founding institutions like The Doon School, Forest Research Institute (FRI), and the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
  • The pleasant climate made it a favorite summer retreat for British officers.
